Can we ride the waves 🌊 and stay grounded? 🌱

Dear friends,

Spring is here! Can you feel the energy shift? I often have a lot of inspiration this time of year and while I know it isn't going to last, I get to learn how to harness it and ride the waves.

This weekend I went back to the beginning (a spring theme 🌱) of my Sacred Rhythms' work: I went to a doula training!

You see, the birth of my first child, like the birth of every child, was an initiation. Not only into my journey as mother but into the sacred power of birth itself. And into the power of the Divine Feminine - a phrase that, at times I detest for its cliche, and other times I embrace because I know that I embody it!

Back in 2014 I trained to be a doula. But, being the anti-establishmentarian that I am, I never finished my actual certification. In retrospect I see how that has impacted my confidence.

Fast forward eleven years! An opportunity to start again 🌱

Trained through DONA International by a Black doula, I'm ready to step up again.

Hey, nice to meet you, do you know what a doula is?

A doula is a non-clinical birth support person. I help the birthing person and her birthing partner/team have a safe, empowered and transformative birth experience. Did you know that having a doula as part of your birth team reduces your risk of unnecessary intervention - which often lead to C-section - and the length of labor?

ALL birthing people deserve to have a doula by their side! Regardless of where the birth takes place, who the clinical providers are (OB, midwife), or income.

The rest of my work through Sacred Rhythms actually supports my doula work.

Prenatal yoga = healthier pregnancy = easier labor = transformative birth = empowered mother

Childbirth education = knowledge = healthier pregnancy = easier labor = transformative birth = empowered mother

I'd love to support your birth as a doula. I'd love to support your best friend, or sister-in-law, or that young lady who lives on your street. Ask her if she knows what a doula is. Then send her my way!

I'll leave you with a verse from my power playlist for my 2hr drive home from the training last night:

The world I love, the tears I drop
To be part of the wave, can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you?

Can we ride the waves and stay grounded?
Dawn

Dear friends, I want to invite you (or your pregnant friends) to our Embodied Birth Skills childbirth education course. You may have heard me talk about this as an evergreen online course - which it is. AND occasionally, when there is enough interest, I offer this course in person! And there has been interest lately. In person can really be amazing! You get the community aspect in addition to the course material, and there is no way that I can replicate community with an online class. Of...

Dear Reader, Do you trust your body? Do you know how to "listen to your body?" Have you ever felt betrayed by your body? I think a lot of women feel confusion about their bodies, what their bodies are "saying" or are fearful about something in their bodies. I think many of us feel like we wish our bodies could do more. Like, the brain says, "you should be able to just get up and do that thing..." or "just keep going, it will be fine!" and then later it is NOT fine! You're exhausted. And...

Dear friends, Do you know why I created Sacred Rhythms? Its the reason so many of the women who are in this field did: because I had a powerful birth experience that made me want to help other women be empowered by birth! I want to protect the birth space I want to prepare women for the initiation I want to hold hands - and hips - with women and they bring their babies down to earth! Way back in 2014 I trained to be a Birth Doula. And even with my own small children in the picture, I attended...
